Gates — Swing & Sliding

Gate Installation in Fresno, CA

Walk gates, double drive gates and sliders built to swing true for years.

The gate is the part of a fence that moves, so it is the part that fails. Nine out of ten sagging, dragging, won't-latch gates in Fresno are not worn out — they were built with a frame that could not carry the span, hung on hinges too light for the weight, or bolted to a post that was never set deep enough to hold a moving load.

AR Fence builds gates as their own piece of engineering. Frames are welded or braced diagonally so the leaf cannot rack, gate posts go deeper and heavier than line posts, and hinges and latches are chosen against the actual weight of the leaf rather than whatever came in the kit. We build in steel, chain-link and wood, and match whatever fence the gate is going into.

Options

Gate Types We Build

Which one is right comes down to your driveway width, your slope and how much room the gate has to swing.

  • Walk gates

Single-leaf side-yard and front-yard gates, three to four feet wide, in any material we fence with.

  • Double swing drive gates

Two leaves meeting in the middle, with a drop rod or cane bolt at the center. The standard driveway gate where there is room to swing inward.

  • Sliding gates

The answer when a driveway slopes toward the street or there is no room for a leaf to swing. Rolls along a track or on V-groove wheels.

  • Cantilever slide gates

Slides on an overhead track with no ground rail, so nothing gets blocked by gravel, debris or a low spot that puddles.

  • Self-closing pool gates

Self-closing, self-latching hardware with the latch at the required height for a California pool barrier.

  • Motor-ready framing

Any drive gate can be built to accept an operator now or later. See our motorized gates page for what that involves.

Our process

How a Gate Job Runs

  1. Step 1

Measure the opening and the swing

Width, slope, where a car has to sit while the gate opens, and whether the leaf clears the driveway apron at full swing.

  2. Step 2

    Choose the configuration

Single or double, swing or slide. On a sloped or tight driveway that decision is usually made for us.

  3. Step 3

    Gate posts set heavy

Larger-diameter posts, deeper holes, more concrete. A gate post carries a live cantilevered load every time somebody opens it.

  4. Step 4

    Frame built and hung

Frame welded or braced, hung on hinges rated for the leaf, then adjusted until it swings true and latches clean.

  5. Step 5

    Hardware and demonstration

Latches, drop rods and stops fitted, then we show you how to adjust it yourself as the ground settles.

Why it works

What Makes a Gate Last

  • The post, not the gate

Most gate failures are post failures. Ours are set for the load from the start.

  • A frame that cannot rack

Diagonal bracing or a welded steel frame stops the sag before it starts.

  • Hardware sized to weight

Hinges and latches specified against the real weight of the leaf, not a generic kit.

  • Matched to your fence

Built in the same material and style so the gate reads as part of the fence line.

Questions

Gates (Swing & Sliding) FAQs

The questions we get asked most about this kind of work.

How wide can a driveway gate be?

A double swing gate handles most residential driveways comfortably. Past that the leaves get heavy and long enough that a slider or a cantilever is the better answer — we will tell you which side of that line your opening falls on.

My driveway slopes toward the street. Can I still have a gate?

Yes, but a swing gate that opens inward will bind on the rise. That is exactly the case a sliding or cantilever gate solves, and it is a common one in older Fresno neighborhoods.

Can you build a gate to match my existing fence?

That is most of what we do. Bring us a photo of the fence and we will build a gate in the same material, height and style so it does not look added on.
